Disability Discrimination Act of 1995
In 1995 a special act known as the Disability Discrimination Act was passed by parliament. This act requires that any place which may provide a public service such as shops, restaurants, theatres, hotels, banks, etc must all make their facilities usable by the majority of disabled persons. All objects which could pose as barriers to entry or which may cause major difficulty for a disabled person to be able to utilise the service must be changed so that they no longer pose a difficulty to disabled patrons. The object in question may be removed entirely, altered so that it no longer causes a problem, or must provide either a different way for the disabled to enter the service area or for the disabled to be able to access the service. Of course, the most obvious solution would be to simply build ramps instead of stairs, and evenĀ a temporary solution such as a roll out ramp would be ideal in keeping the building Disability Discrimination Act compliant.
